Rio de Janeiro has been announced as the host city for the 2024 G20 Youth Summit, known by its acronym Y20. The announcement was made at the closing of the Y20 on Sunday (August 20) in Varanasi, India. Rio will host the summit of the G20 – the group of the world's 20 largest economies – on November 18 and 19 next year, which will also feature 11 engagement groups holding meetings in 2024.
"In 2024, Brazil, the world, and generations will converge in Rio. The Y20 summit will introduce Rio to the youth from all over the world. This announcement confirms the partnership between the City Hall, civil society, G20 engagement groups, and the federal government," celebrated Lucas Padilha, president of the Rio G20 Committee from the Rio City Hall.
Salvino Oliveira, the Secretary of Rio Youth, led the Brazilian delegation. He showcased the successful experiences of Rio City Hall projects aimed at preparing the city's youth for the job market, focusing mainly on Industry 4.0, which already represents a broad field of activity in society. Investing in the qualification of our youth in this sector generates opportunities and opens doors to a better future for them and for the country.
"I am very proud to return to Brazil with the confirmation of Y20 in our city. And to have showcased here the initiatives of Rio City Hall to transform the reality of Rio's youth, creating opportunities, generating knowledge, and providing access to new forms of preparation for the world of work and development," commemorated Salvino Oliveira.
The Y20 concluded with policy proposals aimed at the youth of the 20 member countries of the group. The document produced during the two-day meeting will be delivered to the leaders of nations during the G20 Summit on September 9 and 10, also in New Delhi. This year, the negotiation lines and debates were divided into five thematic axes: _Future of Work: Industry 4.0, Innovation, and 21st-century Skills; Peacebuilding and Reconciliation: Paving the Way for an Era without War; Climate Change and Disaster Risk Reduction: Making Sustainability a Way of Life; Shared Future: Youth in Democracy and Governance; Health, Well-being, and Sport: Agenda for Youth.
As the head of the Brazilian delegation, Salvino Oliveira participated in the Y20's five debate axes, showcasing initiatives such as the Youth Pact, a project in partnership with UNESCO that trains young leaders in Rio communities. Currently, more than 600 youths have participated in the pact, which entails seven months of paid studies with a scholarship of R$ 500. During the course, they learn to research and identify local problems in their own communities and brainstorm solutions for the issues considered most urgent by residents.
